Countdown: TIJF and SNAG 2013

It’s been a while since I last posted, but a lot has been happening. May is quickly approaching, which is, for anyone with an interest in jewelry and metalsmithing, a very exciting month to be in Toronto. May 1st marks the launch of the very first Toronto International Jewelry Festival (TIJF), a month long series of shows and events centered on jewelry and metalsmithing of all kinds. The festival is running in conjunction with the SNAG conference (Society of North American Goldsmiths), which is being held this year in Toronto- the first time it has been in Canada in many, many years! Needless to say, the past month has been a busy one spent preparing for many exciting opportunities to share and experience new work.

Earlier in April, one of my recent neckpieces, Echoes, was accepted to be part of a group exhibition called Transformation at Zilberschmuck, a contemporary art jewelry gallery in Toronto. The show opened on April 11th, and will continue until May 31st. It can also be viewed online here.

Zilberschmuck is one of several venues included in the SNAG art gallery crawl happening in late may.

Last week, there were several new shows that opened at Harbourfront Centre. Because Harbourfront Centre will be co-hosting the SNAG conference, and will be an important creative hub during TIJF, the new shows focus on jewelry and metal works. The show in the main gallery, Re: Position, includes a variety of metal-based works that to challenge our perception of ordinary objects and ideas through manipulation and re-contextualization. It really is a fascinating show to check out if you are in Toronto.

Another great show to see at Harbourfront is Family Album, a collection of work by past and present artists-in-residence from the metal studio. The selection of work captures the unique variety of artists that have spent time developing their practices through the artist-in-residency program at Harbourfront Centre.  As a participant in this exhibition, I decided to create a new piece that would exemplify my most recent explorations. It is similar to the angular neckpiece I have on display at Zilberschmuck.

Currently, I am preparing for the SNAG 2013 Trunk Show being held at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel during the SNAG conference. I am working on a collection of smaller pieces (earrings and brooches) based on my larger neckpieces. I will post some photos and more details soon!
